There's just too much Vader in Fredrikstad

Post by 5062 » 03 Apr 2016, 20:36

The time has come for me to take the step and go for a hero character.
I spent some time searching the Knights of Ren Facebook group, chatting with DS8746 and came up with these parts:

Saints Customs tailor sewn softparts for Kylo Version 2.0 with the Belt.
Imperial Boots Kylo Ren, latest edition.
Endor Finders V2 Gloves.
Wicked Armor Kylo Ren Helmet.
Black Series Light Saber.
JJ Industries Lightsaber Clip.
And Kylo Cold Cast Lightsaber Hilt from Gustavo.

As the Wicked Armor helmet is based on consept drawings of the helmet I have made it on a list for Adil's Kylo helmet, the waiting is unknown so I went for a WA helmet for lvl 1 approval first.

I finally got my Kylo boots from Imperial Boots. I ordered size 43 wich was just a tad too small so hopefully I can widen them out :)

Got the Black series lightsaber this weekend. It's not that impressive, but it will do fine after a few mods :D

Looking good :-) A new paint job is a must for the Hasbro saber, but otherwise it's fine. Not 100% accurate, but easy to find and an ok price. It's also able to be modded to make the blades removable. I used 6-pin DIMM connectors for the main blade, and a couple of setscrews for the side ones. You'll have to do some soldering and cutting, but it works great. Looks identical, only difference is removable blades. Transparent silicone and transparent red spray paint really give the blades a look similar to that in the movie. With the red spray paint you don't get that grey saber look in bright lights, while the intensity of the light is close to what it used to be. Highly recommended.

Thank you very much for the tips! Not sure if I go all the way to remove the blades yet, since I have a Gustavo hilt on the way, but perhaps I'll do it anyway :) Do you have a link for what I need for the operation? I'm packing the blade in gladpack now :)

No, I didn't use a guide exept for figuring out how to dismatle it :-P Just google "kylo ren hasbro removable blades" or something and you'll probably find it. Otherwise you need wire, soldering iron, heat shrink, a dremel, epoxy and a 6-pin DIMM connector (male and female). Make sure it's sturdy. Open it up and desolder the 6 pads that connect the soundboard to the led-blade, resolder the led part to the male dimm and the female dimm to the sound board. You'll have to use wires and heatshrink. Make sure all the connections ends up being the same as they were. Then you'll have to cut away parts of both the blade and the plastic housing and use epoxy so that everything lines up and fits. It should end up being so snug that you don't need to use a set screw.

For the side blades you'll need to extend the wires to the leds and thin down the part of the plastic housing of the blade so that it just barely goes through the side openings of the saber. You'll have to make threaded holes for a set screw on either side. Reassemble and enjoy. It's a bit harder than it sounds, but entirely doable. By the end it'll look the same and function the same, only with removable blades.
