Phasma!

Post by Elsajo » 27 Dec 2015, 17:04

Okay, so Phasma was awesome. But i wonder- How does one get started to build a new charcater? I really like Boba aswell and thats maybe a better place ti start since the parts for him exsists. Or is there anyone i could contact that makes props, armours and so on fast?

Im new to building my own star wars costume but im a cosplayer since some time back.

Hello and Welcome!

Each costume in the 501st Legion falls into a detachment, and each detachment has a forum specifically for discussing how to make their costumes. For long-established costumes there is often a wealth of information, sometimes with threads several years old that contain all the info you will need. For new characters however, things are still in a bit of a state of experimentation ...
In each detachment forum there is often a section for welcoming new forum users. Be sure to visit that first.
Then check the discussions in building, and then the For Sale - area... Make sure to do your research before you buy parts.

For Captain Phasma, I would start at 1st Imperial Stormtrooper Detachment's forum. There is a there section devoted to TFA Stormtroopers and Captain Phasma.
For Boba Fett there is The Bounty Hunters Guild, but I would recommend that you would also check out The Dented Helmet which is not affiliated with the 501st.

For most costuming projects, a rule of thumb is "Fast, Cheap, Good - Pick Two". However, to be eligible for 501st membership, "Good" is required and I think that with at least Phasma, picking any of the other two would be difficult.
The fact that Captain Phasma's armour is metal(ized) could be a big obstacle, but there might be people who have an idea on how to manage it without breaking the bank.

For "fast" Boba prepare to pay 3K+ euros. It'll be good but not cheap.

Metal is difficult....
Metallic spray paint and polish? Will probably not give the mirror finnish seen on screen.
Aluminium tape, will give a mirror finnish, but with lots of edges...

Of course, there are companies which have the equipment necessary to coat plastic with a metal layer. But it will not be cheap...

What about rubb'n'buff, many Jangos use that to get a nice finish if they dont have a cold cast layer

Oh gods. I *hate* rub n'buff with a passion after I tried to use it for my droid. Let's put it this way - my dome is no longer silver, and I will never try to use rub n'buff for anything important ever again. Hopefully your mileage varies.

Around the SW costuming community I would guess it's the Threepio builders that have the most experience with achieving a metal Surface.

Or ask our resident Jango Fett (7060) how he did his plates. Is Phasma actually chromed or is it more of a dull metal. It's hard to tell as it changes from pic to pic...
