WIP - Jawa for Kiddo

Post by 11101 » 09 Mar 2015, 11:19

I finally started a project I had in mind for a very long time now. Since Kiddo is getting too tall for his Commander Cody I decided to build a Jawa because I'm way better with soft parts
than hard parts. So I started with the mask.
For the eyes I used pet LED safety lights. They will be activated by squeezing. These lights had the proper size, but I was not really satisfied with the light. It was to directional. So I sanded the surface and put half of a ping pong ball over it. Now it gives a nice glowing effect.

After I fixed the lights I needed something to attach it to. I broke some sunglasses in kid's size, attached the Jawa eyes to it, and covered the eyes with some layers of fly screen mesh.

Next step is to cover the mask with some fabrics. I sew a balaclava to keep all in place when wearing. Sorry for the crappy picture. The lights seem kind of distorted. It is not the case in reality.

I've ordered brownish Monk's cloth but it will take a while until I get it. Yesterday I found some leftover Monk's cloth from my Tusken. So I started to sew a robe to see how it will look like. Unfortunately, the cloth was not wide enough so I had to cut separate arms.

Working on a Jawa for my kid too.
The mask needs some mesh fabric to cover the eyes, and some black fabric to cover the lower face, but I'm hoping to avoid a balaclava so that the poor kid doesn't get a heatstroke.
The robe is made of a thick wool blend, so I'm sure it will be quite warm already. Hoping to have it ready for 17th of May.

Nice :) I will work on a second version of the mask soon. It will be warm, no doubt. But I guess the balaclava will work best with kiddo's long hair. I replaced parts of it with mesh cloth so there will be some air flow possible.
Got delivered my carob brown monk's cloth and washed it. Now I need to find some time to sew it all together. Still enough time to make it to the 17. of May :)

This is how I made my son's jawa mask, with a fan on top, and I have actually added one more fan. I realised that he needed more than one.

Iron Man mask :D Looks quite robust. The theater mask I started with was so thin and easy to break. Maybe I will try to get a hold of this kind of mask then for my second version :)

Yup. I cut the mouth off to get more air in, and added a strap across the head to keep it in place.

The robe and hood is finished, and I think it looks ok.
The color isn't quite right, so will try with some spray-on cloth coloring to make it more brown.
Used a balaclava in the pics, but will try to attach some fabric to the mask for the final version to black out the face.

Now we're only waiting for the blaster and perhaps a belt :)
Looking forward to testing it out this Saturday.

Motivated by that finished Jawa :), I started working on the robe.

Here is the monk's cloth washed and ironed. The color is not even close to the real color. I noticed that the weight is lighter than the monk's cloth I use for my Tusken. Might be a good thing so that Kiddo doesn't get a heat stroke in it.

The pattern applied. The whole thing will be too big for Kiddo now. But that way I will be able to fit it easily afterwards. Have to see how the fabrics falls.

Cutted fabrics. Wow, that looks big. But I never really trust my measurements and make it bigger, just in case^^
Sewing preparation. It is fraying like crazy so I used a non-professional approach with masking tape^^ to keep everything in place. This will also prevent stretching while sewing it together. I have always trouble sewing monk's cloth without stretching.

Halfway through the hood. I used a plastic tube and wire. Had it laying around from another project. This will keep the hood in shape. also attached Velcro on the inside of the hood to keep the mask and hood in place while wearing later.

I had some time to finish the hood today. Quite satisfied with the result :)
