Biker Scout

TB - Biker Scout

501st Legion Pathfinders: http://www.bikerscout.net

For help with this costume, please contact: TB-3444

There are two variations of Biker Scout that are accepted by the 501st Legion. First is the original Return of the Jedi Scouts who are seen zooming through the forests of Endor on the speeederbikes. The second option is the Shadow Commandos of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Both are farily similar in appearance except that the Storm Commandos are almost entirely clad in black.

Biker Scout

A Biker Scout costume MUST have:

  • Helmet: white licensed (Don Post, Altmann’s, Rubies, etc) or fan-made helmet with a flat smoked/dark tinted lens. It must include a grey and black striped "nose" decal or paint. The face of the snout area must be painted medium grey, outlined with a black stripe, and contain a dark grey snout greeblie with black aerator. There should be a medium grey "squared fish hook" insignia decal on lower forward corner of left visor blind. There are two medium grey trapezoidal rear helmet decals with thin black vertical stripes. And there are black vent stripes on rear helmet hump.
  • Helmet

  • Neckseal: black balaclava or neck gaiter.
  • Undersuit: black, zippered cloth one-piece long sleeve coverall, jumpsuit, flight suit or racing suit. Make your own using the Green Pepper Butte Jumpsuit pattern which can be bought from Seattle Fabrics. It is easy enough as long as you have someone who knows their way around a sewing machine to help you out and can be tailor-made to suit you perfectly. Alternatively you can buy a black flightsuit from most military surplus stores. The lighter the material the better because heavy equals hot and you’ll be more than hot enough anyway. Try to find one without too many pockets and zippers as most of them will need to be removed or covered up.
  • Knee armour/protectors: white armoured pieces with sloped end above the knee.
  • Chest / back plates: white scout breastplate (with dark grey badge stripe on right breast) and scout back plate (with "bullet tank", topped with a black resin topper piece) connected to each other on the sides and over each shoulder with white elastic.
  • Shoulder bells: white armoured scout shoulder bells.

    Chest and shoulder armour

  • Bicep armour / protectors: white armoured plates with black "T-bit" detail. They should be secured around the arm with a black elastic strap.
  • Forearm armour / protectors: white armoured plates secured around the arm with a black elastic strap.
  • Cumberbund: white duck cloth scout cumberbund with standard imperial pouches that are white or slightly beige in colour. When worn the slanted pouch flap sides must face outwards. Again you can make your own. There are tutorials on BSN and on various other websites. The pockets can be a bit difficult to get just right but a bit of time and care is all that’s needed. Very high quality fan-made sets are available for approximately 700SEK but there is usually a fairly long waiting list for these. Details can be found on BSN.
  • Belt: white 2" webbing belt with scout buckle on the face and 4 utility cases attached to the belt sides. There should be a white rear belt canister with a gray ribbed hose segment enclosed within a rectangular box attached to the back of the belt. It should also have two trapezoidal hip boxes hanging from each side of the belt from two straps that connect with black plastic clips. These straps should be white or slightly beige in colour to match the pouches.
  • Gloves: black leather or leather-like enclosed fingered, non-textured gauntlet style gloves with no extraneous buckles, straps, or zippers. Ribbing should be present over the knuckles portion of the gloves.
  • Gloves

  • Boots: white textureless leather or leather-like calf high laceless boots with a wrapping over the instep with beige soles of working boots. Rear calf enclosure of boot may be zippered or secured with Velcro, but neither fixture should be visible.

    Homemade boots

While it is possible to buy professionally made boots, the majority of scouts prefer to make their own. This is not a difficult job, only takes a few hours and will give you great results tailor made to your own feet and legs. Here is a tutorial. It is easier if you have someone to help you.
  • *Note: all armour must be made of ABS, HIPS, styrene, or fiberglass, and should be properly fitted to the costumer via trimming, shimming, etc. Also note that scout trooper costumes that are commercially available may not acceptable for membership. It is recommended that you contact your GML or the LMO before purchasing a retail costume. Armour may be clean/shiny or weathered.

A Biker Scout costume SHOULD have:

  • Blaster: resin, hyper-firm rubber or modified Kenner scout holdout blaster, painted black.
  • Repainted Kenner blaster

  • Boot holster: an armoured boot holster fastened to the right boot with either Velcro or rivets.
  • Gloves: Suede (or faux suede) finger tips on glove thumbs, index and middle fingers.
  • Undersuit: Suede (or faux suede) back flap and riding patches on undersuit. An elastic strap should go around the right thigh that runs underneath the right portion of the riding patch.
  • Flak vest: black vest with short padded and ribbed sleeves, worn over the black undersuit and under the torso armour.
  • Paint: all hard armour should be glossy to represent “reflec coating”.

A Biker Scout costume MAY have:

  • Blaster: a Blastech E-11 blaster rifle, DLT20a sniper rifle or concept Scout carbine.

Storm Commando

A Storm Commando costume MUST have:

  • Helmet: Black licensed (Don Post, Altmann’s, Rubies, etc) or fan-made helmet with a flat green, smoked, black, or mirrored lens.
  • Neckseal: Black, horizontally ribbed (stormtrooper style) neck seal, extending from the base of the neck to the top of the throat.
  • Undersuit: Black, zippered cloth one-piece long sleeve coverall, jumpsuit, flight suit or racing suit.
  • Knee armour / protectors: Black armoured pieces with sloped end above the knee.
  • Chest / back plates: Black Scout breastplate (with dark grey badge stripe on right breast) and Scout back plate (with "bullet tank", topped with a black resin topper piece) connected to each other on the sides and over each shoulder black elastic. The tank must have a pinstripe and anywhere from 4 to 6 "rank stripes" on right side of the tank.
  • Shoulder bells: Black armoured Scout shoulder bells.
  • Bicep armour / protectors: Black armoured plates with black "T-bit" detail (secured around the arm with a black elastic strap).
  • Forearm armour / protectors: Black armoured plates (secured around the arm with a black elastic strap).
  • Cumberbund: Black duck cloth scout cumberbund with standard imperial pouches that are black in colour. When worn the slanted pouch flap sides must face outwards.
  • Belt: Black 2" webbing belt with Scout buckle on the face and 4 utility cases attached to the belt sides. There should be a black rear belt canister with a gray ribbed hose segment enclosed within a rectangular box attached to the back of the belt. It should also have two trapezoidal hip boxes hanging from each side of the belt from two straps that connect with black plastic clips. These straps should be black in colour to match the pouches.
  • Gloves: black leather or leather-like enclosed fingered, non-textured gauntlet style gloves with no extraneous buckles, straps, or zippers. Ribbing should be present over the knuckles portion of the gloves.
  • Boots: Black textureless leather or leather-like calf high laceless boots with a wrapping over the instep black soles of working boots. Rear calf enclosure of boot may be zippered or secured with Velcro, but neither fixture should be visible.

A Storm Commando costume SHOULD have:

  • Helmet: If you have a Don Post or Rubies hemet then it is recommended that you remove the company logo on the back of the neck. It is also recommended that you paint the helmet white to prevent discolouration due to aging vinyl. The thin original lens should be replaced with a sturdier, thicker, and darker lens. The visor hinge bolts should be swapped for correct round, flat ones. The snout aerator should be replaced with a more detailed replacement snout detail assembly.
  • Undersuit: all zippers painted black so as to be less visible.
  • Voice amplifier: such as a ROM / FX or similar system
  • Hand plates: black Stormtrooper style
  • Shin armour: resembling that worn by Jango Fett but in black

A Storm Commando costume MAY have:

  • Helmet: red opaque or reflective helmet lens.
  • Bandoliers: two red bandoliers crossing in the front and back. These should have hard ammo packs and look much like Chewbacca’s but with electronic portions near the buckles.
  • Belt: red buckle on belt.
  • Thigh armour: Resembling that worn by Jango Fett but in black, which would only cover the front half of the leg. It would be attached with black elastic/fabric/leather straps running around the back.
  • Forearm armour: a seam should run along the inside of the forearm armour with a knob resembling a computer key near the inside of the elbow.
  • Blaster: DTL-19 blaster rifle.
  • Holster: black leather or leather-like holster, worn on the right side of belt. It can be mounted to the belt from behind with two rivets or Chicago screws or have loops that go over the belt. It should also have a strap around the thigh armour.

There is also an “Elite” version of the Commando that would have:

  • Neck seal: either a stormtrooper style ribbed neckseal or a black balaclava.
  • Forearm armour: black stormtrooper style forearm armour.
  • Cod armour: stormtrooper style cod-piece that curves inward as it goes down and does not extend horizontally past the groin. It should reach from the utility belt to the point where the pant legs meet.
  • Bicep armour: either standard black stormtrooper style bicep armour or scout style bicep armour.
  • Thigh armour: black stormtrooper-style thigh armour.
  • Gloves: black leather or leather-like gloves with minimal stitching. Gauntlet style are acceptable, but must be tucked into forearm armour.
  • Boots: smooth black leather or leather-like boots with no ornamental stitching or other adornments. If they are taller than ankle height, they must be tucked under shin armour.
