The standards for 501st Legion approved Sith Lord costumes have been
increased considerably in recent years. Although Darth Maul may seem
like a fairly simple costume since there are no plastic parts, it is
actually fairly complex and it is also very difficult to find the
pieces.
Head
One of the most striking features of Darth Maul is his tattooed
face. There are plenty of pictures showing the layout of the tattoos
available on the web but a nice trick is to buy one of Darth Maul
masks which are available and use it as a template. The makeup takes
time to apply, after practice it is possible to get the time down to
approximately one hour but it is still a big job.
The masks can also serve another purpose. You will need to make a
set of vestigial horns if you do not want to have your hood up all
the time. Even if you go for the hood up look I'd still suggest
horns as they add shape to the hood. The horns from the masks can be
cut off and then stuck directly to your head or to a bald cap if you
choose not to shave your head. It is also possible to make your own
horns using latex or clay.
Another important feature is the Sith contact lenses. Although not
essential, they do add a very nice finish to the whole costume and
add an extra feeling of evilness.
Inner Robe
As far as I know there are no licensed Darth Maul costumes
that would be up to 501st Legion standards so you will need to make
the robes yourself. This is made even harder by there being no
pattern to base your work on. The robes are made up of several different
parts. The inner robe is what Maul wears for the final fight on Theed. It actually consists of two separate robes, an under robe
which comes down to knee level and is sleeveless and the main robe
which covers the arms.
Obi-Wan's Jedi Academy has some excellent pictures to base your
costume on as well as suggestions for the fabric to use.
Outer Robe
The outer robe is the one Maul is seen wearing when he attacks
Qui-Gon on Tatooine. It is very detailed and difficult to make so
many Mauls do without it. Once again I would recommend Obi-Wan's Jedi Academy for images to base your costume on
Belt
The belt is made of two main pieces. The inside of the belt is a
solid piece of leather which is just a bit wider than the outer
section. The outside is made of 4 strips of leather which run around
the body. You can either make this yourself or ask a leatherworker
to do it for you if you have one in your area.
Gloves
Maul's gloves are very plain. They are black gloves with a gauntlet
which runs about 6 inches up the forearm. I'm not sure what the real
gloves are but
All Things Renaissance make very nice gloves for around $20.
Boots
The screen used boots are Frank Thomas Titan 101's. As with so many
of the Star Wars costume parts, these are now out of production but
they still turn up on ebay every now and again. Frank Thomas 102's
are a fairly good bet (they are what I use) and can also be bought
on ebay fairly cheaply.
Weapon
Darth Maul's distinctive double-bladed lightsabre is by far the
coolest sabre from the movies. There are a few licensed sabres
available but most of them are made for children to play with and
not suitable for 501st Legion approval. Master Replicas make the
best licensed sabre. It is sold as a single blade but if you buy two
you can then screw them together with an attachment which is
included in the box to make the double blade. Many people choose to
modify these to make the blades stronger or brighter but this is a
personal choice rather than a requirement.
Sci-Fi Replicas sell this sabre at a very competitive price and even include shipping in their
price!
